As a small business person the last 12 years most of my transactions exchange a service or product for financial satisfaction. As a candidate it is a little disconcerting to have to ask for money with little anticipation for electoral success. Unlike lawyers whose license to steal is sanctioned by the authority of the state, real people value their free market associations and their ability to withdraw from sketchy or questionable circumstances. Recognizing this personal and now very public conundrum, here's my pitch.
Most of the contributions into the campaign coffers of Republicans and Democrats come from outside the district. While some operatives in one campaign grouse about the contributions to the ailing Congressman and tout their own fundraising ability, they fail to mention that most if not all of the contributions come from wealthy individuals outside the district. Small contributions of $20 and $50 to this campaign will be reflected in our first FEC filing. This will provide us the necessary grassroots component to be taken seriously by large corporate news outlets. It is not the amount of money, so much as the evidence that people are generally upset and willing to step up and say, 'no more'.
One of the leading Libertarian candidates for Congress is experiencing trouble with regard to his campaign fundraising. Having raised over $100K so far, critics are questioning expenditures that include dinners and refrigerators. Given as little as our current goal of $5K we could host or support a live televised debate amongst candidates or produce a very effective fundraising letter initiative. We have the computers, phones, office space, banners and website costs under wraps. A small business person has to be very creative when it comes to investing resources into success. Sweat equity, blood and tears are often the only currency we have. Please consider this promise and focus when it comes to our campaign in the next few months. We will be there in November. We offer perhaps the only choice. Full expenditure disclosure will be forthcoming and easily obtained. Show us the district is involved and ready to fight moneyed and special interests.
