The TU's Ms. Benjamin was at the convention and I didn't pester her about our campaign.
Her focus seemed to be on bigger fish and I let her do her job. I was happy to provide a clarification about the NOTA acronym and will use my Silberger card later on down the campaign trail.
I think I had the same reaction as Ms. Benjamin when she realized Weld had won, 'wow'. Except mine was when I read a description of the party as highly 'unorthodox'. Granted, the view that prostitution shouldn't be illegal as long as consenting adults agree, might be considered less than orthodox. But why is the principle of Liberty in regards to drugs and guns so uncommon ?
Perhaps we've become so used to the guiding hand of the state in every aspect of our lives, that it is unorthodox to question it. Less government and more personal freedom used to be the hallmark of American life. Now it is 'highly' unorthodox. For every platform issue that conservatives or liberals seek to tag onto the LP, an equal amount of attention should be devoted to the practicalities of their all too real policies.
It actually was quite a leap for Mr. Weld to take. A small marginalized party in the Empire State. The risk of labels and accusations of insanity. He won't get the Conservative nod. John Faso will. I remember being a lad in the eighties and working the sausage grill with Mr. Faso at the Columbia County Conservative picnics. He's been playing that card for a while.
Sympathy for the Libertarian perspective sometimes tops 20% in some polls. The reality of a two party system that dominates based on an electoral mechanism might start to be changed. Focus on lack of Democracy and Justice in the system. We can defend the positions of Liberty with reason and logic.
