Fred Lebrun dropped a term in this week's TU that I hadn't seen in that context. I believe "Historic Inevitability", is the approach to political truth that most media parlay. Candidates and parties succumb to it all the time. We just know that Hillary & Elliot will win their political fight. But in the mean time our former restaurant reviewer and our cut and paste reporters will fill in the space so all those trees can keep coming down so Mr. & Mr. Smith can read their paper in the morning. Those high-speed connections just aren't worth it yet.
The Mr. Smith who publishes the paper wants to see more trees killed and to think he's dealing in the truth. His primary concern of course being not to have irate politicos from one junta or the other call and make him perspire in his expensive shirt. Thus we had the battle of the 'flyers' this week instead of any word about the televised debate the minor leaguers are having across the Hudson, two blocks from the now acknowledged 'main' Democratic opponents new office. Truth is a funny thing.
Unless it's the beginning of winter, the only time I need the paper is when visiting in-laws. They always have it and for some reason. I always read George Will & David Brooks just to confirm why I didn't try a career plying my predictable thoughts on the world. It's real easy to see how they all got suckered into a pre-emptive war without real cause or constitutional muster. They need to sell stuff. War sells. A nine trillion dollar debt is so ho-hum.
From my perspective its just not worth the restraint anymore in the hope that Tim O'Brien will feature us in any story. He doesn't cover the 20th CD on Saturdays btw.
Some have suggested that running as a Donkey or an Elephant might be more effective in terms of politics. I can't see how. Number one, a lifetime of endless meetings and bickering for the right to be the personality of the red or blue gangsters seems intolerable. Living a life devoid of principle or meaning is even more problematic. I can, however, risk one summer in the middle of my life to say I tried to advance the cause of Liberty. When the kids get old enough they'll appreciate the home movies Daddy and Mommy made in the summer of 06.
