Excerpts . . .
Would Mr. Weld, we wonder, have opposed a measure to make possession
of three illegal guns, instead of 20, a felony? Or the sale of just one
illegal gun? It's hard to imagine him supporting such sensible gun laws.
On the issue of drugs, Mr. Weld is more clear. His views aren't nearly
as radical as the party that supports the legalization of marijuana, for
instance. His failure to voice opposition to anti-drug laws is already a
source of tension between him and the Libertarians.
Mr. Weld likewise says he opposes legalizing prostitution, which
raises questions about seeking the endorsement of a party that supports it.
Mr. Weld needs to explain why he's now the candidate of a minor party
that he can't find many positions or issues where he can agree. It's one
more reason why New York should stop the travesty of letting candidates be
the nominee of more than one party at a time.
Here's some help for Rex and the boys.
1. Any crime committed with any amount guns should be prosecuted to the extent of the law.
The police officer issue is an emotional lever that controllers love to exploit.
2. Legalizing something often declared 'medical' doesn't seem radical. The Drug War has been perpetuated on the people of NYS too long. Liberty is about individual choice and responsibility. The right to ingest any substance so long as no corollary harm occurs is sound reasoning. Keeping drugs illegal has the defacto affect of supporting organized crime. Profits drive markets, even if they are 'black'. Advocating a prohibition is naive and has a deleterious effect on all.
3. Nobody has made prostitution a major issue here, but the pollyanna press. The right for adults to engage in consensual sex seems secure until money is exchanged.
4. The travesty is a dominant two party system whose bloated budgets and burdensome taxation drives out more people then it retains. A candidate with a proven record of fiscal restraint has merits beyond the fringe issues. What is the greater evil being perpetuated on the people ?
Grown men should not get paid to write such silly editorials.
