Free State Project

I think I get it now. The FSP is an attempt to take otherwise robust individualists and prompt them into spirited activists. Their orientation is towards real results. Their gathering this last week in Lancaster, NH is a testament to their successful activity in the last three years since its inception. Not directly associated with the NHLP many aspects of freedom and liberty are shared amongst this growing group.

Originally conceived by Dr. Jason Sorens in an essay, the idea is that 20,000 freedom oriented folks could heavily influence or dominate a small state's politics. They're beginning to reassess this number and have concluded that a 1000 'super-activists' might do the job too. This might be an excellent excuse not to rely on such heavy numbers for such a life changing event or goal.
Home schooling, the National ID and smoking bans are all issues FSP'ers have taken on this last year. Many different groups from the NH Liberty Alliance, NH NORML, The Republican Liberty Caucus and other differently aligned groups have contributed to the success of Liberty oriented activism. The group working against you on the smoking ban, maybe an ally in the National ID issue.
Don Gorman does an excellent job in his talk getting the troops fired up to be a 'Free Stater'. Dawn Lincoln's home school quest and the 'Winter of Joel' are his endearing tales of dedicated individual's focus on activism. His appeal to freedom and liberty is as keen as his 'soccer mom' imitation. When the saints go marching in. Hopefully we'll have some video of Don on the blog, it's the only thing that will do him justice in this regard.
New Hampshire is unique. It has about 400 legislators for 1.2 million people. You're bound to meet a current or former rep in your casual travels and happenings. Access to committee hearings is also key. If one or two people stand up and say no or yeah to something that was universally accepted, it can make a big difference. A legislator inclined towards your feelings on a matter often only needs one brave soul in a crowd.
If your job, family or house doesn't depend on a geographical location and you value liberty, moving to New Hampshire seems like a good idea. Never one for the evangelical or collectivist reflex, we met people from all over the country who fit that bill. The couple from South Carolina and the guy from Kentucky. They seem to be managing fine in the winters. If you're from the North East the adjustment will be minimal. If you're really into freedom and liberty, the change will be refreshing.
