Thank you for your editorial calling for
candidates in the 20th district to talk about
issues and stop the sniping (Stick to the
Issues, 7/21/06).
Unfortunately, the Times Union and other
media encourage such misbehavior by
reporting every mudsling by insiders like
Sweeney and Gillibrand. Meanwhile you do
not reward candidates who talk about
issues by covering their campaigns.
Eric Sundwall (Libertarian, 20th district),
Tom Raleigh (Democrat, 21st), and I
(Warren Redlich, Republican, 21st) are
talking about issues. Sundwall's website is
so full of issues it would take ten articles to
get a start. Raleigh is downright wonkish on
national security issues. I've got my "Stop
Wasting Money" theme in full gear on my
website. And the Times Union has run a
total of two articles on our campaigns.
While that is two more than most other
media, it doesn't compare to the 44 articles
you've printed mentioning Gillibrand so far
in 2006, much less the hundreds of times
you've mentioned Sweeney and McNulty.
Most challengers feel disfavored by the
media. Sometimes it seems like the only
way to get coverage is to imitate Bob Dole's
Viagra pitch. I hereby endorse flushable
hemorrhoid wipes. Will you cover my
campaign now?
