Eminence Front & Center

My parents house was built prior to the American Revolution. It might be a prime property for one of these gentrified Bed & Breakfasts that pop-up in historical rural areas. After the Kelo case in the Supreme Court, many home and business owners are reacting to it on a local basis. eminent_domain1.jpg If the government can now decide your house or business is worth more in tax revenues than you can manage, off you go. Fortunately Libertarians in NY are against this taking and will defend the rights of property owners pretty much without doubt or regret. Here's the latest version of 'Hardfire', featuring Richard Cooper, chair of the LPNY . . .

French Toast too Damn High !

A curious political event occurred a few doors down from The Bowery Mission. Amongst the restaurant equipment merchant district just above ChinaTown and just over from the 'Village', is a bar/lounge called the Katrana (I hope). front_bowery.jpg It was the host to the first third party gubernatorial debate in NY. It's participants were the Libertarian's own John Clifton and organized by Jimmy McMillan, candidate for The Rent is Too Damn High party. Or at least what Jimmy McMillan hopes is a new party. In order to be an 'official' party in NY, an individual who has agreed to carry the banner of an interested group must attain 50,000 votes for Governor. Mr. McMillan tells me he collected 15,000 signatures with the help of community activists and volunteers. Despite being on the ballot, he is certainly not being covered as even the other third parties are. He also grouses that New York State is trying to deny him the 'damn' part on the ballot. I was asked at the last minute to video tape this event on Saturday October 28. Here's what happened . . .

Got the T-Shirt

Congressman Sweeney's recent comment about Iraq in the PostStar's 'print-debate' in the 20th CD was the following: "Those who propose immediate withdrawal cannot answer the question of what happens to Iraq and global security after we leave." war_answer.jpg Advocates of 'realism' in foreign policy can answer this very simply. The bottom line is that our security interests, not Iraq's or global security should be the priority for legislator's or statesman. This doesn't fly with the Richard Holbrooke's or Condi's of the world, or even hardcore Liberatraians for that matter. If one is not part of the complicitors that put us into this mess to begin with, urging immediate withdrawal is motivated by common sense and indifference to the plight of people who don't want us there anyway.

The IRS: Breaking the Code

If these clever fellows like Howard Wolfson had any guts they'd come to the Gillibrand camp with a viable solution to create debate. IRS2.gif All the hemming and hawing about tax returns could easily be countered by asking the Congressman what is the specific law that requires me to pay income tax ? While typically relegated to the ethereal realm of conspiracy, Aaron Russo's new documantary, America:From Freedom to Fascism is now available on Google Video. It features former IRS agents and commissioners giving accounts about the notion that no single law was ever passed by Congress requiring an individual to surrender their income. Of course, individuals invested in the system or fearful of it's wrath would never take such a bold step. It would stop the impasse in this instance because the ramifications would be far wider than the current spat.

What Eliot Can't Do . . .

We try not to strike current politicians here, because policy and philosophy are more important, right ?

None the less, it might be the last time to be more effective with some negativity before the new Kahuna finishes taking reservations for the Pepsi Ball. elliot.jpg My favorite recollection of a NY governor was Hugh Carey after his hair turned orange. As I listen to the MSM AG debate, I shudder at the Cuomo voice coming back at me. As a lad in Middle School I joined the Conservative chorus against him because he was forcing me to use my seatbelt when I was finally old enough to drive. After that it was just waste money and try to cleverly rationalize with a uber-moralizing tone. When George came the speed limit went back up and nothing ever changed after that . . . Now here comes a new cape crusading part time King . . . Help quality people fight the system in the next four years - Vote Clifton Silberger !

Outside the Black Box: The Blank Ballot

Attending the honors program at SUNY Albany, John Gunnell had us read a series of books relating to the discipline of political science. Disenchanted Realists was about the angst held by members of the discipline and the divergent view of the roles of that same discipline towards the public in general. paper_ballot5.jpg Ultimately I find this stuff for more interesting then some of the internal rifts in the Liberty movement. We'll get to that stuff after the election. Until then it seems so obvious what the simple immediate solution might be. Hang on to your hats this maybe a long one . . .

The Great Non-Debate

As the impasse to debate in NY's 20th District continues, it appears more likely that the candidates will not square off. debate1.jpg A shame really. The voters are denied a fundamental aspect of the democratic process. We organized a debate in early June that was avoided by both the heavies in this race. Citizen Action sponsered a healthcare forum in July that we were invited to. Despite what I knew to be an obvious hijack of free market values, I took the hit for the ertswhile Congressman who apparently was in town that day. Here's the video archive I made of that event. At least some vestige of debate is preserved from this looney race.

Sign This !

If you get a chance go over and lend support to the idea that other candidates who are in fact on the ballot have a chance to debate the Big People. petition.gif Not too sure it will help or have any effect on things. the culture of the power elite is petrified of open and honest debate. Give it a try. As they say when they try to invoke the Math Tax (the lottery) - Ya never know. This is not an ideological driven message or idea. Notice the diversity of interests on the list. BTW - Vote Third Party anyway.

The Real Attorney General Debate

While some bemoan the lack of choice between the two mainstream candidates, libertarians are restoring dialogue to the debate. thirdparty.jpg While I know Chris Garvey from my work in the party, I did have the opportunity to participate in the Eminent Domain Rally in Albany in April with Rachel Treichler. Not sure who the Socialists guy is, but hey, who gave him the opportunity to promote his anti-capitalist message ? Libertarians of course ! Here's the new HardFire episode featuring the People's candidates:

My buddy Don . . .

One of the reasons I became active in the LPNY was the Senatorial campaign of Dr. Donald Silberger. His radio interview with Alan Chartock confirmed my desire to work with people identifying Liberty as the greatest political goal.Don_Eric.jpg This photo of Don and me is at the Catskill Bi-Centennial this last summer. We also worked the Rhinebeck Fireman's parade with Thomas Ruks a few weeks before this. Ruk's once referred to Don as the 'fire' of the LPNY. Don is twice my age and I had trouble keeping up with him during petitioning. He simply asked every human being he came across for the right to be on the ballot. Don's bid for Lt. Governor includes this latest HardFire episode. The cool part about the Net is that this show hasn't even aired yet and will now be available before the Sunday morning yappers start their thing. I miss David Brinkley, he was Don's era also.

Libertarian Enigma ? Bob Barr . . .

I met Bob Barr briefly at the Portland convention this summer. He takes a lot of heat from the left for his advocacy of the Clinton impeachment. bob_barr.jpg Libertarians in Georgia in fact took credit for his defeat at the polls in 2002. Despite his accolades as a drug warrior he's often cited as being quite Libertarian. So when Mr. Barr spoke this summer in Portland it was heartening to hear a message of Liberty. Here's another piece from the archives.

Welcome Liberty & Reform Caucus - Meet Barry Hess

Libertarian candidate for Governor in Arizona, Barry Hess, sat down with me in Portland and we discussed many things.Barry%20Hess%20Gray%20BackgroundSmall.jpg Here's our back and forth. They may very well have been discussing the pledge or platform while we were doing this, Barry was kind enough to sit and discuss issues. Hopefully this interview and the speech that follows is not too late to help his effort in Arizona. With any luck we get some future help from Barry & Mr. Hancock breaking up the ballot access requirements in New York. Yes, that's 'StarChild' in the background . . .

LP Guys take it to the street . . .

A good number of LP candidates across the country are making news this election season.our_guy.jpg I was happy to see Phil Maymin in CT get into his debates. Phil did a stellar job. He counterd mainstream politics with solid answers and solutions. I especially like how he conserved his time and was able to shred an old MSM bobblehead. Roads. Everyone wants to make Libertarians justify roads. Despite the shortcomings of the Fairtax idea, it's an opportunity for people to consider actually eliminating others. Here's what some other noteworthies this cycle.

Judicial Straight Jacket - Part I

If not for three 'random' people represented by the top election law lawyer in the GOP, we would not have had to waltz into Federal Court and ask why over 1300 people were completely disenfranchised from Democracy in NY's 20th Congressional District. straightJacket.jpgYou have to be nice in court. An empty, large intriquely wood paneled room with classic pewter ordornments, black marble compliments, sleek video screens and microphones. Everybody jumps up like a sargent in a room full of officers when the man in black enters. In the end the judge seemed very sympathetic and hoped we had luck on up the line. Walk the line.

A Federal Case About It

Today it gets jiggy as the kids say. The paperwork is signed.ripcord_red.jpgTRO's, complaints, affadavits and all that other whoha that the preisthood likes to throw around and dance with. Whatever court time I see we'll make sure it gets clogged in my filter and shot back here at the 'ol blog. Boxes of paper work, special blue forms, yellow ones. All the news trucks are down there today for the big terrorist case. My shoes have metal in them.

Libertarian Talk Show - Hardfire

Gary Popkin of Brooklyn produces a public access show for Brooklyn CATV which features Libertarian themes and guests.talk_show.jpg Much like the early days of CNN, these programs talk about issues without commerical interruption and the incessant opinions of obnoxious hosts. This programing offers a unique insight into many of the LP's positions. Join the guests and hosts in an informative talk show format not constrained by media conglomerates or a tepid producer. Watch as we cut to real issues, now. Here's a sample of some recent shows with current candidates.

Fifty Words or Less ?

Candidates, even Libertarians, receive a bevy of 'questionnaires' from various special interests all touting their ability to reach voters with their organization if you just answer their questions. lwv.jpgFor the most part we tried to answer all of them, despite what we would consider the hidden agendas. We had a good experience with the debate we organized in June and that the local LWV 'moderated'. They were responsive and very professional. We tend to think that had we made it through the ballot process, we would not be invited to debate because of the unreasonable 10% threshold that they demand from candidates. Here's our response to their last questionnaire;
