Congressman Ron Paul took the first step towards running for President the other day. He formed an exploratory committee. While some people are starting to grouse already, others are , simply relieved that they might have an opportunity to be a part of something that rarely happens. That is, a presidential campaign that would represent a real different look at government and be taken somewhat seriously.
Big and small L libertarians would work together on this one. Anti-war elements might even be persuaded to consider a principled vote that didn't threaten their cherished collectivism. Yeah, doubtful I know. Especially if a Prince or Princess of the Left springs forward. Maybe he could even write a book and call it "The Audacity of Peace". Too late for the coffee table gifts now . . .
While it all may be a cruel joke one still has to hope. Like the Red Sox fan waiting for a chance to break a curse, one still remains prone on the ground with one's hands in the crotch when the invariable news of the next hope for Liberty fades. For big 'L' libertarians they may in fact continue to support and get candidates on the ballot for the next thirty years. Someone is always willing to try it. But for average people without the time for Rothbard or Dr. Milstead, the average 'reduce' government candidate that their grandfather could vote for (nothing personal Mr. Phillies) is a rarity. Don't stop giving or supporting your favorite LP options. They provide hope and bemusement at very high personal costs. Even the tin foil hats have hearts. The good ones keep coming back.
Mr. Paul is doing a wonderful thing if he offers his candidacy for the mess which is the American Presidency. The LP would do fine to have him for a second try, an honor really. Mr. Paul has served his community and their families for decades. He could easily pass a few more terms (one hopes) as a Congressman and never have a regret about his career. This is a wide open seat. If the Free State Project could pull off a 'Dean-Like' miracle up their way, a Paul candidacy could easily transition into an LP and/or CP effort. The prospects are always ridiculously hideous when it comes to reality however. Colleges germinate progressives and business minds can be vessels for others ambitions, this painting the whole picture red and blue. The only thing holding back this type of candidacy are people themselves, not Ron Paul. Starting a new canvas to all the abused and disjointed tax payers would be a marvelous painting.
While some will suffer the pageantry of progressives as they assume the reigns of power, they surely must do so with the knowledge that the libertarian swing vote would like a club or sandbox of their own. A huge percentage of independents could use another example like Perot or Ventura. Mr. Paul's consistent advocacy of less government should instill the remnants of those who favored Goldwater. Hipster generational 'newbies' to life should feel honored to carry this torch of Liberty. Pro choicers should be mollified by the fact the man is gynecologist and still would not want government to assume the decision. Immigration just happens, so get over it. Form groups, send messages, money etc. Just do something before Hillary and McCain are not in Chris Matthews every other spoken word.
A fast and immediate donation to Mr. Paul's committee will do a lot for his staff and organizers to make a decent determination of what they can do next. It's not fancy or slick like Rudy and Mitt's, just humble and straightforward. Kinda like Ron himself. You can't ask Joe Trippi to work for free. People should attend the Liberty Forum up in NH in February and hope there is a vibe of organized resistance that can convert the best trust funders from Bennington College to be a Pauloholic. Getting troops on the ground there could affect the entire race. Mr. Paul has the only consistent congressional record in regard to Liberty and people in NH can appreciate that. Trying to get Republican farmers from the mid-west to walk over to the other side of the room seems much more problematic.
There was a question at the Hudson debate directed at Morris Guller, Ed Pell and myself regarding which Congressman we would like to emulate, Nancy Pelosi, Denny Hastert or Ron Paul. I'll presume you know what my response was. Couple more posts and this blog has to go . . . enjoy the lack of snow.
Mr. Paul's whole neo-conned thing on Youtube is worth watching. Here's final four minutes of it.
