No Revenue Stone Unturned

The Turning Stone and all other state sponsored gambling should be shut down. I once stopped in the Turning Stone with a buddy a few years back on a business trip. I couldn't just pop twenty bucks into the slots without getting a card and essentially 'registering' my transactions. TurningStone.jpgAfter refusing such nonsense, as my buddy went happily off to waste his money, I figured the bar would be a good spot to spend some otherwise wasted time. Lo and behold no alcohol on the premises! Needless to say it was my one and only visit. Why do we allow these restrictive means and measures into our personal vices ? What happens when government subsidizes or licenses these 'services' ? One could argue that free market casinos are less fraudulent than government as a whole.

Politicians love to cozy up with the business of gambling. Wheras previous political fortunes were often made by cracking down on what was considered a societal vice, the Indian loophole has proven very lucrative for states like Connecticut with the advent of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. It's also why we wring our hands about horses and think our lottery fortunes are tied to education.

As industry and service sector jobs flee NYS because of high taxes and out of control worker's compensation claims, deals are being struck which will regulate and profit from the introduction of lavish facilities which do nothing but share the illusion of riches and fortune at the toss of the die or flip of the card. While this good free marketeer is not opposed to endeavors which seek to bilk the mathematically challenged, regulation by the state and the potential liabilities to the taxpayer are the major rift in our thinking.
